Blue Christmas Service Dec. 15

SHREVE — The holiday season can be difficult for those who are dealing with pain and loss.

It’s the reason Shreve United Methodist Church is offering a Blue Christmas Service from 7-8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15.

“We want to reach out to the hurting, who can sometimes get lost in the celebration,” said Holly Grant, leader of the church’s Griefshare events. A Blue Christmas is a gentle, contemplative service that gives people a chance to hear about God’s love for them. In a candle lighting ceremony, four candles will represent a different type of loss or disappointment. A center candle will represent Jesus, and from that candle all other candles will be lit.

Communion will be served and light refreshments will follow the service.

In past years, the church has hosted the Griefshare program Surviving The Holidays, so this is another way to reach out to people who may be facing the loss of a loved one, loss of a job, or loss of hope, Grant said.

The service is being planned by those from the church involved in Griefshare, but it is not affiliated with Griefshare.

SUMC also will host a 13-week GriefShare program beginning Jan. 16 from 7-8:30 p.m. and continuing each Thursday at the same time through April 9.
