(Strawberry & Ice Cream
Festival)

Phyllis and
Lee Debnar, New Bedford, Ohio
are shown with two of his
father’s favorite paintings of
trains and steel mills bringing
history to life with precise
detailing. They give a good
clear and dramatic glimpse into
the past. They look so real that
you can almost smell the smoke,
hear the steam whistle and feel
the shaking and trembling of the
earth as the big steam engines
rumble down the track.

Notice
the detail in this Amtrak
Turboliner leaving Chicago
Roger L.
Debnar (1917 – 1988) a native of
Rayland, Ohio had received
numerous awards for his
paintings. He began painting in
1975 after retiring from over 30
years as a foreman in the
Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Mill.
One brother and two sisters also
began painting about the same
time and they did a family art
show in Weirton, W. Va. Their
father was an artist at the East
Liverpool Glass and Pottery
Factory.
He
displayed his works in many
shows throughout the Ohio Valley
including Bethany College,
Canfield Fair, Wellsburg Art
Show, Ohio State Fair, Roscoe
Village and Pomerene Fine Arts
Center, Coshocton, Ohio.
He started
taking lessons from the late
Catherine Roberston of
Wellsburg, then from Samuel
White of Brooke High School, to
whom he gave credit for teaching
him the details that are now
such an important part of his
paintings.
Phyllis and
Lee are showing a collection of
his father’s paintings (filling
the north wall of the second
building)

A BIT OF A PHOTO TOUR ABOUT THE
MUSEUM

When you
visit
the Ken Miller Supply's Oil,
Gas, Car, Truck and Agriculture
Museum, you'll see how the Oil
Industry used to be. Each of the
Displays have a printed
explanation attached to the unit
or group of pieces on display.
It is an "Eye Opener" and
educational. This photo is a
part of the "Evolution of Barrel
Hauling." The County Line
Historical Society of Wayne and
Holmes Counties have the Museum
open on the second Saturday of
each month, 12:00 noon to 3:00
p.m. Cost to visit this vast
collection is $5.00 per adult
with a maximum of $15.00 per
family. All proceeds go to the
County Line Historical Society
to be used on the furnishings
and upkeep of their new museum,
now under construction in
downtown Shreve located across
from Shreve Mobil. The tour is
self guided with a printed "Tour
Guide" to move you through the
two buildings housing hundreds
of displays involving thousands
of related pieces to the history
of the industry and Ken Miller's
business and his dedication to
the industry. There will be
several volunteers from the
County Line Historical Society
on hand to answer any questions
you may have and to offer their
assistance to make your tour
more enjoyable.

Ken Miller's first truck was
this red 1949 GMC. An
interesting story goes with this
truck. Be sure to read about it
at the truck or it is also
included in the printed "Tour
Guide" you will receive.

Oil Photos were a part of this
industry and a buggy was on hand
with photographer ready to take
care of your order.

Above is a 1915 Packard Truck.
Mounted on the truck is a very
old pumping unit.

The Miller Family has allocated
the County Line Historical
Society a bay in the second
building for some of the
Society's
items. Shown is Big Prairie's
Fire Extinguisher used in the
late 1800's and early 1900's.
The bay also includes the
Pennsylvania Railroad exhibit
from James Pennell's collection.

The second building is loaded
with tractors, trucks and cars
with hundreds of items on the
walls.

You'll also find a 1929 Ford
Truck, a 1935 International, a
1931 Ford Truck, a 1929 REA, a
1923 Kelly, a 1926 GMC Truck and
others along with several cars.
Among the cars are a 1941 Chevy,
a 1949 Plymouth and a 1936 Ford.
There is a Nash Metropolitan, a
four-engine race car with over
1,200 horsepower and an Edsel
among others.

County Line Historical News

Guest speaker was Gerald Payne
when County Line Historical
Society met January 19 at Miller
Museum. Payne is an impersonator
of Abraham Lincoln, and talked
about his speeches and letters.
Helen Sprowls and Nancy Raymond
were thanked for the December
and January window displays and
hosts for the museum, James
Pennell, Ron Junkin, Jody Long
and Nancy Raymond were also
thanked. Several guests were
welcomed.
New
board member, Mary Lou Frost
will serve a three year term
along with the officers,
president Ron Junkin; treasurer
Helen Sprowls; secretary Jayne
Neal; vice president James
Pennell; advisor Wes Plant;
corresponding secretary Carrie
Brown; board members Glenn
Bower, Jr. and Frank
Garrett and publicity, Bill
Fought.
The
Antique Roadshow was held on
Sunday afternoon, January 27
with a good crowd bringing in
older items to be valued by
local Antique experts. A full
report will be given at the next
membership meeting on March 15
at the Miller Museum. Speaker
will be Dean A. Freytag from
Ashland giving a slide
presentation on the "Fascination
of Steel Mills."

Progress on the new County Line
Historical Society of Wayne and
Holmes Counties Museum located
downtown Shreve across from
Shreve Mobil is shown here as
carpenters restore the front of
the building that was used by
Fought's Bluebird Bakery from
1904 to 1917. John Troyer and
his crew have restored the
original historical Victorian
front of the building which will
be used by the Society as a
Library/Visitor Center.

This restoration began in the
fall of 2007 and is a part of
the new museum which will also
include the previous Tin Shop
located next door to the north
that used to be the home of
Geeseman Grocery and later both
buildings housed the former
Grosjean Roofing.

Miller and Sons this past fall
built a new roof including many
of the rafters over the former
Tin Shop which will become the
new Museum.

At
the back of both buildings W. T.
McKee Construction cleared and
excavated the rear lot
with drainage and two catch
basins and connecting to the
storm sewer system on Market St.
3D Construction did the cement
work on the parking area. The
retaining wall, consisting of
large 5000 lb. blocks of cement,
was put into place by Menuez
Bros. Sand and Gravel, Inc.

B&B Painting is shown here
getting the outside painting
done before winter settled in on
them. They will be back to paint
the inside when that phase is
completed to the new museum.
Water-Watts about the same time
put a new furnace in the
basement and ran enough duct
work up to the main floor to
keep the inside warm for the
winter.

This photo shows how the Museum
looks at this point in time as
the buildings are fully enclosed
for the winter. The building is
being funded with local
donations and a $100,000 grant
provided by the state of Ohio
through the Cultural Facilities
Commission, Ted Strickland,
Governor. The County Line's
Construction Administrator is
Dan Moorefield of Shreve. Ron
Junkin, president, Wes Plant
advisor, of the Society have
been instrumental in putting
this project together with the
support of their members and the
community of the Shreve area.
The $200,000 project is now into
phase two of finishing the
buildings as an additional
$25,000 was given to Society by
the Shreve Business and
Community Assoc. to allow the
project keep a more productive
schedule.
