Big
Game Hunting in Ohio:
The Paleo-Indian Legacy
To many avid hunters across Ohio, the passing seasons of the year are
not winter, spring, summer, and fall; but squirrel, rabbit, deer, and
turkey season. This preoccupation with local wildlife has characterized
generation after generation of peoples living here in Ohio. The very
first hunters to pursue game across the forests and fields of Ohio were
the Paleo-Indians who arrived in Ohio some 12,000 to 14,000 years ago.
Fashioning their hunting gear out of wood, bone, and stone, Paleo-Indians
were the first true “Big Game Hunters”; they pursued such Ice Age
“megafauna” as the Wooly Mammoth, the American Mastodon, the Giant
Short-Faced Bear, and the Saber-Toothed Cat. Dr. Nigel Brush will
discuss: (1) the various Ice Age animals that once lived in Ohio, (2)
the Paleo-Indians who hunted these animals, (3) the tools and weapons
these early hunters used, and (4) archaeological sites in Wayne, Holmes
and Coshocton County that date to the Ice Age.
Dr. Nigel Brush
is an Associate Professor of Geology at Ashland
University. He holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of
California at Los Angeles, an M.A. in Archaeological Method and Theory
from the University of Southampton in England, and a B.A. in
Anthropology from the Ohio State University. Nigel has taught courses
in anthropology, archaeology, geology, and environmental studies at The
College of Wooster, Kent State University, Ohio State University, The
University of Akron, and Wayne College. He served as curator at the Killbuck Valley Museum of Natural History for 10 years, has published a
book entitled: The Limitations of Scientific Truth, and is
currently a director of the Ashland/Wooster/ Columbus Archaeological and
Geological Consortium.
